OAS stands for Odisha Administrative Service and it is the most respected and a prestigious job in the society of Odisha.

How Can I become an OAS Officer?

To become OAS Officer you have to qualify in the Odisha Civil Services examination that is conducted by OPSC(Odisha Public Service Commission) every year. 1. OAS Educational Qualification

The minimum educational qualification required to appear in the exam for OAS is a degree. The candidate must have a degree from any government-recognized university. The degree may be in fields.

There is no role of your mark in the degree in this exam to become an OAS officer or appearing the exam, the only thing that matters is just a degree certificate. This is the main OAS qualification to appear in the OPSC exam to become an OAS officer.

The candidate must have the knowledge to read and write in the local language that is Odia. They must have an Odia subject in their high school education in order to become an OAS officer. These are all the OAS qualification


2. OAS Age Limit

The age limit to become an OAS officer varies from category to category. There is a different age limit for General, OBC. SC/ST and Physically challenged people. There is also have a separate OAS age limit for the female candidate. Let's below see the OAS age limit in detail.

The minimum age limit to appear in the OAS exam is 21 years. The maximum age limits for the different categories are as follows:-

  • Maximum OAS age limit for the general male candidate -  32 years
  • Maximum OAS age limit for the Ews category candidate - 32 years
  • Maximum OAS age limit for Female candidate - 37 years
  • Maximum OAS age limit for SC/ST/OBC/S.E.B.C/Ex-Serviceman - 37 years
  • Maximum OAS age limit for PWDs candidate - 42 years

Please note that the candidate that comes under more than one category will be eligible for only one category of age relaxation benefits and that age relaxation is considered which is most beneficial for him/her.


3. No Of Attempts in OAS

The no of attempts is the most asked question among the OAS aspirants who are willing to become an OAS officer. The no of the attempts is different for different categories.

  • For General Category no of attempts - 04
  • For S.E.B.C/ OBC no of attempts - 07
  • For SC/ST no of attempts - Unlimited times until reaching the maximum age limit

4. Nationality of an OAS

The candidate who is applying for the Odisha civil services examination must be an Indian Citizen to become an OAS officer.

They have to provide proof of the citizen of India during the submission of the application form.


5. OAS Physical Health

The candidate must go through a medical check-up before the appointment. They must be qualified in that physical test to get appointed.

The candidate must have sound mental health to become an OAS officer as well as be physically fit to do their duty properly.

Exam Pattern of OAS/OPSC

The OAS/OPSC examination is a multi-stage examination. It has mainly a three-stage examination. You have to qualify in all the stages to become an OAS officer. The three stages are:-

  1. OPSC/OAS Preliminary Examination [Objective]
  2. OPSC/OAS Main Examination [Subjective]
  3. Personality Test (Interview)

1. Preliminary Examination for OAS

It is the first stage of the OAS/OPSC examination. The preliminary examination has a total of 400 no of marks and has the only objective type of questions. You have to clear this preliminary exam to go further to become an OAS Officer. It has two papers that is:-

  1. Paper-1 (General Studies)
  2. Paper-2 (Aptitude Test)

1. General Studies (Paper-1)

It is the first paper of the Preliminary examination. It carries 200 marks. The marks secured in this paper will be counted in your total marks of the OPSC examination. The duration of the exam is 2 hours. This paper is conducted to test the general awareness of the candidate. For your better understanding, we will give some points below.

  • Exam Duration - 2hr
  • Exam Timing - 9.30 to 11.30 a.m
  • Total no of Questions - 100
  • Total no of marks - 200
  • Negative marking - Yes
  • Negative marking amount - 1/3rd mark of one question
  • For one wrong answer mark deducted - 0.66 

OPSC OAS Prelims GS paper-1 Syllabus

The syllabus of the OPSC Preliminary examination paper-I are of follows:-

  1. History of India and Indian Movement
  2. Indian polity, Political System, Panchyati Raj, Rights issues, etc.
  3. Economic and Social Development, Poverty, Social Sector Initiative, etc.
  4. The physical, social, and economic geography of India and the world
  5. General Science
  6. Ecology, Biodiversity
  7. Current affairs

2. Aptitude Test (Paper-2)

It is the second paper of the preliminary exam. It is just a qualifying paper i.e you only have to pass in this paper to go further. The qualifying number of this paper is 33%. This paper is conducted by the OPSC on the same day of the paper 1 examination. This is a 2 hours examination. This paper test the candidate's ability in reasoning and analytical skills. 

  • Exam Duration - 2hr
  • Exam Timing - 2.30 to 4.30 p.m
  • Total no of Questions - 80
  • Total no of marks - 200
  • Negative Marking - Yes
  • Negative Marking amount - 1/3rd mark of one question
  • For one wrong answer mark deducted - 0.833

OPSC OAS Prelims GS paper-2 Syllabus

The syllabus of the OPSC Preliminary examination GS Paper-II are of follows:-

  1. English language Comprehension (Class-X level)
  2. Basic Numeracy (Class-X level)
  3. Data Interpretation( Charts, Graphs, Table - Class-X level)
  4. Logical reasoning and analytical ability


2. OPSC/OAS Main Examination

This is the second stage of the OAS/OPSC examination. You must qualify in the first stage, which is the preliminary stage to appear in the Main examination and to become an OAS Officer. OPSC examination has 7 subjects out of which 5 subjects are compulsory subjects and 2 are optional subjects. It has a total of 2600 marks. This is the most important stage for you to become an OAS Officer. Each optional subjects have 2 paper. These 7 subjects are given below. 

  1. Paper1 - Odia
  2. Paper2 - English
  3. Paper3 - English Essay
  4. Paper4 - General Studies - I
  5. Paper5 - General Studies - II
  6. Paper6 - Optional Subjects (Paper-1 and paper-2)

3. Personality Test (Interview)

This is the 3rd stage or the final stage of the OPSC examination. In this test, the interviewer test the personality of the candidate. You can only appear in the interview when you clear both the stages i.e Preliminary stage and the Main stage. This has 250 marks. The interview is conducted by the board appointed by OPSC. After you successfully qualify in this stage you will finally be ready to become an OAS Officer.

OAS Salary

OAS officer receives a handsome amount of salary from the government. The starting salary of an OAS officer is around 44k per month. The average salary of an OAS officer is between 44K to 56K per month. It can go up with the increase of experience and also depends upon the post of the service.
